In previous articles we have talked about multiple applications in which ozone is essential. Today we are going to talk specifically about the foliar treatment for growing peppers, since it is one of the most recent projects in which GreenBioZone has worked.
As has been demonstrated, and as many farmers have already verified, the use of ozone in agriculture allows to increase the productivity of agricultural holdings between 15% and 40%, applying to more than 250 different crops. The reason is that the ozone favors the oxygenation of the roots, achieves a higher quality product and acts to prevent diseases or pests of plants.
This is how ozone Works
Ozone is an effective natural disinfectant composed of three oxygen atoms, whose main advantage in order to be applied in agriculture and in the field of different food industries is that it decomposes into oxygen when it has already acted. For this reason, ozone does not leave any type of chemical residue, neither in the installation nor in the food product. However, as it cannot be stored or transported, it must be generated by an ozone machine in the vicinity of the place where it is to be applied.
The ozone systems for agriculture are very useful and offer great benefits, since, in addition to not leaving any residue, using an ozone generator improves production, prevents the proliferation of diseases, promotes rooting and helps to save on chemicals, at the same time that you have to remove that chemical waste. It is the way to significantly increase profitability.
Each crop requires a different type of installation. Ozone, as we have said, is present in nature, and is created by electric discharges that, in a controlled way, can be recreated thanks to the ozone equipment that we will install in GreenBioZone for your company.
The cultivation of peppers
In the world, the first pepper producing country is China, with 16,000,000 tons. Spain is in the sixth place with a production of 1,023,700 tons, of which 583,827 tons are exported, being the second at export level after Holland (data gathered from FAOSTAT, 2016).
The production of greenhouse peppers for fresh consumption is increasing with respect to other crops grown outdoors and of different origins. In the case of Murcia, which is the region where the largest pepper production is located, a semi-processed crop is chosen that acquires a certain relevance and in which usual plant material from greenhouse cultivation is used.
It should be noted that ozone has proven to be a very effective alternative to prevent and control diseases of stem and root (Phytophthora, Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia …) and airborne diseases (Mycosphaerella, Botrytis, Sclerotinia, Mildew, Alternaria, Oídio. ..).
Greater safety and a healthier environment
On the other hand, ozone generators can eliminate pesticides and make employees in the agricultural sector work less risky and in a healthier way. To avoid most direct contact with pesticides, workers must use gloves at all times, as well as using different types of safety devices, such as waterproof clothing and masks to avoid coming into contact with the gases produced by the chemical elements.
Occasionally, working with pesticides on a regular basis, as in the case of agricultural work, can cause, among other symptoms, allergies, which are characterized by the appearance of intense tearing, spots on the skin, headache, cough, red and swollen eyes. Something that makes workers of agricultural plants easily exposed to any of these conditions.
However, with a system of ozone generators applied to agricultural crops, in addition to improving the health of workers, economic costs are reduced, due to savings in phytosanitary products, fertilizers and water at risk, contributing to significantly increase the profitability of agricultural holdings.
The main applications of ozone in agriculture are the injection of ozonized water into irrigation and the foliar treatments to which ozone is applied by spraying. Irrigation with ozonated water disinfects the roots and the substrate, preventing the appearance of diseases caused by bacteria or fungi. In addition, the decomposition of ozone into oxygen ensures new and healthy roots until the end of cultivation. This ozonated water can be used perfectly to clean floors and utensils, in order to eliminate the remains of pesticides that may remain on them.
